IT is believed a wetsuit may have saved the life of a 43-year-old swimmer who lost consciousness in Lough Derg after getting into difficulty on Saturday night.
He was one of eight people rescued from the lake in a 14-hour period on what was a busy weekend for emergency services.

There were fears for the safety of the swimmer, who appeared from the shore to be in distress near Twomilegate, two miles from Killaloe. Killaloe Coast Guard members were despatched to the scene at about 9pm and two volunteers entered the water and rescued the unconscious man.

It is understood he regained consciousness as he was being placed in an ambulance.

He was treated for hypothermia in the Mid Western Regional Hospital.

Killaloe Coast Guard also responded to an emergency call at 11am on Sunday after a boat with seven people on board struck rocks. The vessel was towed ashore, with no injuries reported.
