LIMERICK GAA's teen sensation Ian Ryan has travelled to Australia for a two-week trial with a top Australian Rules club.
The 19 year old Shanagolden attacker was contacted last month by Aussie Rules agent Ricky Nixon and the St. Senan's man's subsequent sparkling form in the All-Ireland qualifiers against Meath and Kildare led to the offer of a trial in Melbourne.
He
departed for Australia last week along with another triallist from Longford.
Ryan is to take part in ten days training with AFL club Essendon at their training facilities in Windy Hill.
The 19 times AFL champions are based in Melbourne and play out of the 53,000 capacity Telstra Dome.
This weekend, Ryan is to attend 'The Bombers' home game against Adelaide. Ryan, a student in Mary Immaculate College, only made his Munster senior football championship debut against Tipperary earlier this summer. The attacker kicked three frees in the win over the Premier County and then he landed three points from play and two frees in the agonising defeat to Cork.
Against Meath the 6'2" teenager came to national prominence with a personal return of 3-7 against no less a player than Darren Fay.
While both John Quane and Stephen Kelly were both part of international rules squads no one from Limerick has tried their hand at the professional game down under.
Ryan will miss this weekend's fourth round of the Limerick's Live 95FM sponsored county senior football championship. His St. Senan's club play Monaleen in one of the ties of the round in Clarina on Saturday evening - all games start at 7.15pm.
Five of the six games are scheduled for Saturday. Claughaun attempt to fight off any relegation troubles when they face fellow dual club Adare in Mungret. In Newcastle West is the all-west clash of recent champions Drom-Broadford and Fr. Casey's of Abbeyfeale.
Pallasgreen and Athea meet in Croagh while St. Kierans play Hospital-Herbertstown in Ballingarry. On Friday evening Ballylanders play Newcastle West in Ballyagran.
