MUNSTER kicked off what promises to be the most historic season in their long history with an emphatic 26-point win over a disappointing US Eagles in Rentschlers Field in Conneticut on Saturday.
The six-try 46-22 performance will have pleased coach Tony McGahan although two of the three tries conceded came from defensive errors.
Munster looked sharp and displayed a high fitness level for this first game of the new campaign. Their handling was superb, they spread the ball wide at great pace and replacements Barry Murphy and Frankie Sheahan will be particularly pleased with their brace of tries. Keith Earls was also impressive.
John O'Sullivan, who suffered an injury in the corresponding fixture last season also had a good outing, but there are concerns about Mike Prendergast who limped off with a knee injury.
Although the Heineken Cup champions fielded almost a second string line-up they never looked like losing this game once they had rubbed out the USA's early 8-0 lead.
A penalty and a conversion by Paul Warwick and a fine try from Lifemi Mafi put Munster into a 10-8 lead and although the Eagles trailed by just five points, 15-20, at the interval (Billy Holland finishing a brilliant Earls break), Munster imposed their superiority from there to the end.
Twice in succession after the restart the Munster pack mauled over the USA line for hooker Frankie Sheahan to get the touchdowns to push the visitors 32-15 in front, but when a poor pass to Tipoki close to the Munster line gifted Eagles out-half Malifa with a seven-pointer the margin was reduced to ten points.
Barry Murphy imposed his influence on the game soon after his arrival by crashing over for a great try.
The UL Bohs star showed his class again before the final whistle searing through the Eagles defence for a brilliant try which Jeremy Manning converted to bring his contribution to six points from three conversions.
Paul Warwick, who only played the opening 40 minutes, contributed ten points from two penalties and two conversions.
