MUNSTER are working on plans to turn the official opening of Thomond Park into a weekend rugby festival.
While nothing has yet been confirmed some of the suggestions before the organising committee include performances of John Breen's record-breaking play Alone It Stands, the setting up of a giant screen in the city to relay the Munster v All Blacks gam
e and numerous other activities to showcase the iconic new Limerick stadium.
Meetings to discuss the proposals continued this week and an official announcement is expected before the end of this month.
"There are a lot of factors that have to be investigated before we can finalise our plans," a spokesman for the stadium told the Limerick Leader this Wednesday.
"There are a lot of meetings going on but we will certainly be trying to highlight the opening of Thomond Park as much as possible that weekend."
The spokesman also played down speculation that Munster would be playing Leinster in the first game at the stadium since its completion: "The fixtures for the Magners League 2008-09 have not yet been released so we don't know who Munster will be playing around that time. We have to wait and see before we make any decision. The playing surface has been re-seeded and practice matches will have to be played on it prior to any competitive game. There is a whole lot of work to be done on the pitch between now and the opening game but the picture should be clearer within the next four weeks."
Ticket prices for the Munster v New Zealand game in Thomond Park on Tuesday, November 18 have not yet been decided. Ireland play the All Blacks in Croke Park the previous Saturday giving Munster the opportunity to field at full-strength three days later.
The Heineken Cup champions' opening game of the 2008-09 season will be friendlies against the United States in the Rentshcler Stadium on Saturday, August 23 and against London Irish in Musgrave Park on Friday, August 29.
Meanwhile the Annual General Meeting of UL Bohemian RFC was recently held in the Kilmurry Lodge Hotel and a large number of members attended a lively and productive meeting.
Outgoing President, David Fitzgerald outlined the highlights of the past season, and in particular the success of the under 20's who won the All Ireland under 20 league for the first time, and also winning the North Munster under 20 cup. He noted that the size and quality of squads at all levels had grown considerably, and the club can look forward to the future with confidence.
He also congratulated Castletroy College on their magnificent achievement in winning both the Schools Senior & Junior cups.
His last official duty as President was to present the Clubman of the Year award, and the popular winner of this coveted award this year went to Mick Nix, manager of the under 20 squad.
Incoming President, Michael Goggin highlighted his family's long connection with the club and he thanked the members for the honour bestowed upon him, and he looked forward to another successful year.
Other major changes saw Ambrose Garvey stepping down as Club Registrar and Neil Kelly as chairman of underage rugby.
Treasurer Tom Kinirons gave a comprehensive report on the club's finances and on the re-development of our clubhouse in the new Thomond Park.
UL Bohs are very fortunate to have such a capable person holding the purse strings in what is the most difficult job in the club.

Offices elected for the next year are as follows: President - Michael Goggin, Senior Vice President - Ted Mulcahy, Junior Vice President - John Lenahan, Secretary - David Fitzgerald, Treasurer - Tom Kinirons, Club Registrar - Tony Quilty, Under Age Representative - Michael McLoughlin.
