A REMARKABLE nine of the 12 teams remain in contention for knockout places as the Limerick's Live 95FM county senior football championship reaches the final round of group games next weekend.
City sides Monaleen and Claughaun are two of the three sides that remain without a win to their credit and find themselves in relegation trouble.
The city duo meet in the final round next weekend in what is effectively a relegation semi-final.
Intermediate champions Athea are also in relegation trouble and unless they score a big win over St. Kieran's in their final group game they will play the losing side in the all-city clash in the relegation final.
At the business end of the championship champions Ballylanders and last season's beaten finalists Drom-Broadford are in pole position to advance directly to the semi-finals.
Both have 100 per cent records and could almost afford to lose their final games and still top their respective groups.
Ballylanders play Pallasgreen in their final game.
Elsewhere in Group One, Newcastle West, Pallasgreen, St. Kieran's and Hospital-Herbertstown can all still mathematically qualify for the quarter-finals.
Next weekend Newcastle West play Hospital-Herbertstown, Pallasgreen play Ballylanders and St. Kierans play Athea.
In Group Two Fr. Casey's, Adare and St. Senan's are vying to join Drom-Broadford in the knockout stages. Next weekend, Adare meet Fr. Casey's while St. Senan's play Drom-Broadford.
Fr. Casey's will be keeping fingers crossed that Padraig Browne recovers from a hamstring strain while the St. Senan's efforts will be helped by the return of Ian Ryan.
The 19-year-old returns tomorrow from Australia, where he is on a two-week trial with a top Australian Rules club. The Shanagolden attacker was contacted last month by Aussie Rules agent Ricky Nixon and the inter-county man's subsequent sparkling form in the All-Ireland qualifiers against Meath and Kildare led to the offer of a trial in Melbourne with Essendon.
