RICHIE Bennis needed just one word to describe his side's elimination from the Munster senior hurling championship. "Sloppy," said the Limerick manager with a rueful shake of his head.
"We were very sloppy, in the second half especially - we were caught ball watching."
Bennis explained: "It was all down to the four sloppy goals that we conceded - we were caught ball watching and that was it.
"They are killers and they give Clare the momentum to go forward," he said of the two goals in each half for The Banner.
The first of the Clare goals came in the 12th minute, with their second in the 27th.
They had played with the wind in the first half, so the half time deficit of 2-7 to 0-6 was not the end of the world for Limerick.
"We came back into the game twice," recalled Bennis.
"Against the breeze we looked good and were 0-4 to 0-2 ahead and we conceded two very sloppy goals and then in the second half we brought them back to two points and with 15 minutes to go, we again conceded two more sloppy goals," said Bennis with another shake of his head.
Limerick were on the up 18 minutes into the second half when the scoreboard read 2-9 to 1-10.
Then all came crashing down with two goals in three minutes.
"We are very disappointed - I can't describe how I feel," said a heart-broken Bennis.
"We put an awful lot of work into this team and this game and nothing went right for us.
"We are very down because we put an awful lot into this. There are two men in there, Dave Moriarty and Gary, and what they put into this game was unreal," said Bennis speaking to the Limerick Leader outside of team's dressing room beneath the stand.
"I am not making excuses, the better team won on the day and thats that."
Bennis agreed that the wind played its part, but stated that it "wasn't a contributory factor to us losing".
"Playing against the breeze was a good decision, because we were only seven points down at half time and we had it brought back to two points within 12 minutes," he said of his side's tactics.
Not happy with his team's performance and certainly not happy with Dublin referee Eamonn Morris.
"I could not be happy with him," said Bennis of the match official.
"No, I wasn't happy with him and that might get me into trouble, but that won't worry me."
A disappointed Bennis attempted to confront the referee at the final whistle, but he "ran off the field".
"We felt strongly about a yellow card incident and he threw in the ball - surely if someone gets a yellow card, there should be a free.
"The yellow card was the one that aggrieved me big time - in the first half one of there fellas got a yellow card and he threw in the ball and in the second half when we got a yellow card it was a free," he explained.
Right at a death, Bennis felt his side could have been awarded a penalty when Brendan Bugler was sent off for a wild pull across Niall Moran.
"Very much so, but it wouldn't have made any difference because he was going to blow full time," sighed Bennis.
