THERE are 10 names on the short list to become the next Limerick senior hurling manager - outgoing manager, Richie Bennis is among the list of nominees that will now be interviewed by a sub committee of seven officials.
At this Tuesday night's special County Board meeting in the South Court Hotel it was confirmed that Bennis was nominated by his own club Patrickswell and by Newcastle West. Another ex-Limerick senior hurling manger to receive a nomination was Tom Ryan, who was nominated by his own club, Ballybrown and Croagh-Kilfinny.
As well as Bennis and Ryan, the list also includes another four former inter-county managers - former Clare manager Tony Considine, former Waterford manager Justin McCarthy, former Offaly manager Pat Fleury and former Kerry manager Eddie Murphy.
However, it is not yet known if McCarthy or Fleury are interested in the job - McCarthy was nominated by the Camogue Rovers club, while Fleury was nominated by Blackrock GAA cub.
The clubs didn't contact with the individuals before submitting the nominees so neither have confirmed their interest.
Just days before he leads the Limerick team into Saturday's All-Ireland intermediate hurling final intermediate manager Gerry Molyneaux was nominated by his club Rathkeale.
Current under-21 manager, Ciaran Carey, who plays full-back on the intermediate team this Saturday, was nominated to become senior manager by the Hospital-Herbertstown and Kildimo GAA clubs.
Bennis, Ryan, Considine and Pat Herbert were all nominated two years ago, when Bennis got the job. Herbert, an army officer based in The Curragh, was nominated by his native Ahane, Adare and Glenroe.
Completing the list of nominees is Brian Ryan. A selector when Limerick reached the All-Ireland minor hurling final of 2005 Ryan was nominated by Staker Wallace GAA club.
All ten nominees have now been passed to the specially-appointed sub-committee to undertake the interviews.
The September 9 County Board meeting would then be the earliest possible date for the appointment of a new manager, but a later date is more likely. Those tasked with proposing one of the nominees are Limerick GAA chairman, Liam Lenihan, secretary Mike O'Riordan, treasurer Owen Hayes and one club delegate from each division - Oliver Mann (Patrickswell), Louis Quirke (Ahane), Jim Dooley (Garryspillane) and Jimmy Stapleton (Granagh-Ballingarry).
What is known is that the new management will be put in place for an initial term of two years with an option for a third year and that the new hurling management will only comprise of a manager and two selectors.
