NEXT Tuesday night Limerick will take the first step towards the appointment of a sixth senior hurling manager in ten years. A special County Board meeting takes place next Tuesday night in the South Court Hotel where all nominations for the vacant position will be announced.
All nominees will then be passed to the specially-appointed sub-committee to undertake the interview process.
The September 9 County Board meeting would then be the earliest possible date for the appointment of a new manager, but a later date would be more likely. Those tasked with proposing one of the nominees are Limerick GAA chairman Liam Lenihan, secretary Mike O'Riordan, treasurer Owen Hayes and one club delegate from each division - Oliver Mann (Patrickswell), Louis Quirke (Ahane), Jim Dooley (Garryspillane) and Jimmy Stapleton (Granagh-Ballingarry).
If anything a sense of apathy surrounds this latest appointment. The rumour mill has not been as active as one would expect and last week's County Board meeting failed to attract a capacity crowd. Publicly, Richie Bennis has stated his desire to continue, although selector Anthony O'Riordan and trainer Dave Moriarty have stepped aside.
Former manager Tom Ryan has indicated that he would return in his weekly column in The Daily Mail and current intermediate manager Gerry Molyneaux has indicated that he wants to make the step-up to the senior grade.
While clubs have until next Tuesday to submit nominees other possibilities are Ciaran Carey, Pat Herbert, Tony Considine, Ger Hegarty and Ger Cunningham.
What is known is that the new management will be put in place for an initial term of two years and that the new hurling management will only comprise of a manager and two selectors.
The search is also underway for a new senior football manager and the Football Board are to meet this week to discuss the issue.
This week the Limerick Leader received a statement from six members of the 1956 Munster Minor Football Championship winning team giving their backing to the out-going management.
Eamonn O'Connor, Liam Downey, Marty McNamara, JJ O'Donovan, Jack Quinlivan and Mickey Walsh have appealed "to the common sense of the county board to retain the services of Mickey Ned O'Sullivan, Donie Buckley and the rest of the backroom team for another year at least.
"Progress was made in the last 12 months, so we would ask at this time not to interfere with the current structures that are in place and the formula and direction that the team is taking, as we have the utmost faith in the players and the management, the performance and their achievements this year to date."
