YOUNG Munster have signed Gloucester scrum-half Mike Prendergast and the 31-year-old will move into the out-half position as the Greenfields side returns to division one AIL rugby next season.
New Zealander Tom Wells, who joined 'Munsters' last season, returns home at the weekend after one season at Tom Clifford Park. Wells suffered a broken jaw midway through the division two campaign.
Prendergast, a former Young Munster player, moved to the Munster squad when under the reign of Alan Gaffney and then to Garryowen, but lack of first team action with Munster saw him sign a one-year deal with French Top 14 side Bourgoin. Mike played for the French side against Munster in Thomond Park in a Heineken Cup pool game in 2006-07
He went to Gloucester last summer on a two-year contract.
Garryowen failed to retain the AIL title yesterday in Musgrave Park, putting in their worst performance of the season in a disappointing final.
It was the light blues' third final defeat since 1998, losing once to Shannon and twice to Constitution.
Much was expected of this Garryowen side following their impressive 31-6 defeat of local rivals Shannon in the semi-final eight days earlier. This time they failed to find their true form and despite a promising opening 15 minutes they had no answer to a fiery home pack and the accurate kicking of out-half Jeremy Manning.
"It is very disappointing," a dejected Garryowen coach Dara O'Sullivan told us after the final whistle.
"They were very physical up front and we never really got going."
This was a final game in the light blue shirt for Garryowen's Peter Malone.
The talented number eight returns to his former club Bruff next season in division two.
Munster also played below par at the Cork venue on Saturday night, losing 21-18 to a determined Glasgow Warriors side.
The game marked the end of an outstanding career in the Munster shirt for Anthony Foley whose trademark first half try highlighted a special night for him.
The defeat is unlikely to dampen Munster's preparations for the Heineken Cup final against Toulouse in two week's time and if anything, the performance will steel the squad in their attempt to win the European Cup title for the second time in three seasons.
Munster are expected to delve into the transfer market over the summer months with at least three new names added to the current squad. The name of New Zealand back-row Jerry Collins has been mentioned.
Munster have not yet advertised the coaching appointment following the announcement of Declan Kidney's departure last Wednesday.
It is expected that the replacement will be a high profile coach from outside of this island.
